The Market District is the redevelopment of the former Xenia Towne Square Shopping Center located in downtown Xenia, OH. The Market District concept takes inspiration from the townscapes of small, historic Ohio villages while incorporating updated ideas for streetscapes and public spaces to create a vibrant mixed-use development.

REDEVELOPMENT PLAN

In late 2020, the City of Xenia engaged Dillin to prepare a community-driven and actionable redevelopment plan for the entire shopping center.

The process began with public input through surveys and community focus groups. Following the robust response from the community, a stakeholder group was formed to led a plan development process.

THE HISTORY

On April 3, 1974 a F5 tornado struck Xenia, Ohio devastating the downtown. The Xenia Towne Square Shopping Center was developed in association with a federally-funded urban renewal project that followed the 1974 tornado. Prior to the Xenia Towne Square, this neighborhood was radically different.

The area was an organic extension of downtown Xenia, with commercial and mixed uses gradually transitioning toward residential neighborhoods. The pattern of short blocks, sidewalks and buildings close to the street made the area highly walkable.
